Board Meeting Highlights May 9-10, 2008
The Board of Psychology conducts four quarterly board meetings each year. Board meeting minutes are available to the public once they have been approved and adopted by the Board at a subsequent meeting. To inform the public of the major actions or discussions of each Board meeting without waiting for the approved minutes, Board staff produces this document entitled "Board Meeting Highlights" and makes it available to the public as soon as possible following the Board meeting. This summary is for informational purposes only and is not intended to be viewed as the official minutes of the Board meeting.
The Board of Psychology met on May 9-10, 2008, at the Marriott Burbank Hotel & Convention Center, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, CA 91505. The following summarizes the major highlights of the board meeting:
- The Board's Executive Officer, Mr. Kahane, reported that the Board's office has successfully been relocated to 2005 Evergreen Street, Suite 1400, Sacramento, CA 95815.
- The Board reviewed draft regulatory language eliminating the requirement for individual continuing education course review and implementing a continuing education provider approval program. Revisions to the draft language will be made and brought back to the August 2008 Board meeting.
- The Board voted to approve language for a regulatory change and set it for hearing, regarding the submission of a plan by psychological assistants accruing supervised professional experience in private practice (Title 16, California Code of Regulations, Sections 1387(b)(10) and 1387.6) at the August 2008 Board meeting.
- The Board voted to approve language for a regulatory change and set it for hearing, regarding changing the expiration date of psychological assistant registrations from January 31st of each year to one year from the date of issuance of the registration (Title 16, California Code of Regulations, Sections 1391.4, 1391.10 and 1391.12) at the August 2008 Board meeting.
- The Board, in working towards the next occupational analysis, discussed the possibility of eliminating the vignettes and increasing the number of non-vignette related questions in the California Psychology Supplemental Exam. The Board's ultimate goal for the California examination will test Law, Ethics, and the higher order thinking needed to competently practice the profession of psychology in California.
- The California Psychology Law and Ethics Examination is now being given to qualified applicants.
- The Board decided to move forward with plans to conduct a diversity conference in collaboration with the California Psychological Association. Tentatively, the conference will be scheduled in late September in the greater Los Angeles area.
- The Board created the Contemporary and Emerging Issues Committee to monitor issues such as prescription privileges, disaster response, etc.
- Mr. James McGhee was elected to serve a second term as President, and Dr. Sharon O'Connor was elected to serve a second term as Vice-President.
- Regulation updates:
- Postdoctoral Supervised Professional Experience (CAPIC) - Amendments to Title 16, California Code of Regulations section 1387(a)(2)(A) - Hearing was held on November 17, 2007, at which the Board adopted the proposed language. Board staff is revising the Economic and Fiscal Impact Statement, Final Statement of Reasons and Request for Approval of Regulations for submission to the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA).
- Supervised Professional Experience (non-mental health) - Amendments to Title 16, California Code of Regulations section 1387.3 - Hearing was held on February 10, 2007, at which the Board adopted new language. The final rulemaking file has been approved by the Office of Administrative Law and becomes effective on May 24, 2008.
- New Examination (CPLEE) - Amendments to Title 16, California Code of Regulations sections 1381.5, 1388, 1388.6 and 1392 - Hearing was held on February 10, 2007. Modified language was adopted by Board. The final rulemaking file has been approved by the Office of Administrative Law and became effective April 1, 2008.
